DualDisc is a new two-sided CD and DVD disc product
introduced primarily by the video and music industry, with
DVD recorded material on one side and CD digital audio material
on the other.
DualDisc is playable on existing CD
and DVD hardware, personal computers and game consoles. It
capitalises on the popularity of DVD by including a portion
that can contain exclusive video footage, unique films or
other video content that helps to expand the relationship
between a company and its target audience.
Dean Underwood comments; “DualDisc offers a very attractive marketing proposition as each side
of the disc works exactly as a separate DVD-ROM or CD-ROM
would, allowing marketers from both B2B and B2C sectors to
access all target audiences with just the one disc.

“The CD side of DualDisc is a
conventional CD which can hold all of the usual CD formats
currently available to traditional users, with only a slightly
reduced capacity.”
Among the many benefits, DualDisc is
identical in size to a standard CD or DVD, offers pre-ripped
AAC, WMA &/or MP3 files in stereo and surround sound,
as well as enhanced value supplements such as bonus tracks.
With the DVD-ROM material there is the potential of customer
registration, to collect further material from websites. Already
there are over 100 titles (DVD movie plus CD audio) released
in 2006 alone.
Dean adds; “From our perspective as
an optical media and creative packaging specialist, we know
that DualDisc packaging options are the same for traditional
CD and DVD products, including: Jewel Case; Amaray Case; Digipack, Softpack; SuperJewel; etc.
“In addition, there are a number of
exciting jewel case derivatives developed by different suppliers,
one of which is Sony’s ‘Duracase’.
Similar to the CD Jewel Case concept, it incorporates a special
extension to the case, as well as embossed branding to identify
a DualDisc from its conventional counterparts. This packaging
is quite distinctive in the way that the DVD Amaray case has
been used to visually identify CD from DVD.”

Where Can I Play A DualDisc?
We recommend using the DVD side if you have a DVD player in order to enjoy the entire album in enhanced audio and the additional DVD features. The DVD side plays wherever a DVD plays - including many gaming consoles and computers. In a PC, the DVD side acts like a DVD-ROM on DualDiscs that include computer extras and Web links. The CD side plays on all but a limited number of CD and DVD models.
How Can I Tell Which Side Is Which?
Each side is clearly marked for play on a CD or DVD player.
