HDC Media Group decided to hold a green themed fun day on 12 July 2007 due to the nature of our newly designed Green packaging. All our employees got involved by dressing up and joining in the various activities. The office was decorated with paper chain garlands and old CD/DVD’s, all of which are fully recyclable.
Helpful tips on how to be 'green' were dotted around the office, along with reminders to switch off the lights when not in use. We also removed the kettle from the office for the day, as our water vending machine can also heat water just below boiling – meaning we only boil what we need. On average a kettle uses the same amount of energy to boil 1 litre of water as it takes to run a fridge for 8 hours, so it’s a good idea to boil only as much water as you need.
As the day unfolded, staff voted for the ‘best dressed’ and the prize went to Karl Hallam. We also had a resident ‘Green Grocer’ who handed out green fruit and treats throughout the day.

Many thanks to our local Asda store who supplied our green grocers outfit.
Everyone enjoyed listening to Green Day’s album on repeat, drinking green tea all day and stuffing our faces on green fruit and goodies!

Here at HDC we've kick-started the new year off
with a bang, eager to ensure 2007 is as successful, challenging
and productive as 2006 has been for us. Take a look at our achievements
and developments within the optical media industry during 2006.
Our performance
We'd like to take this opportunity to pat ourselves
on the back for yet another monster of a year in terms of sales.
During 2006 HDC delivered 1750 optical media projects, giving us
a 7% increase in our annual gross profit compared to the previous
trading period.
The HDC family expanded once more as we welcomed
Karl Hallam as a Graphic Designer, Emma Steward and Keith Williams
both as Account Managers, and Helen Roberts as our Receptionist,
all joining the team during 2006.
HDC upholds its premise on Recycling
During the course of 2006, HDC continued to recycle
all it's unwanted material including obsolete and surplus CD's and
DVD's. This unwanted stock is collected by Poly
C Reclaimers, who are specialised recyclers for all plastics.
In addition to this, we continually recycle all our unwanted paper
and card.
If you have a CD or DVD project coming up, we recommend
requesting a sample of our complete range of digipacks, wallets
and paper parts made from recycled stock. Our green packaging range
has a great look and feel, as well as being environmentally friendly.
Flash memory
The popularity of Flash memory, including USB sticks
and SD cards is forever increasing and HDC can proudly state that
we are no stranger to the market. We have been established providers
of Flash memory for some years now, and offer all shapes and sizes
of memory.
See our webpage on Flash
memory for more information.
Free bar code service
HDC now offer a free bar code service. Allow us
to integrate a bar code into your product design, allowing it to
be appropriately used within the retail market.
See our webpage which details our free
of charge bar code service for more information.
Blu-ray Vs HD-DVD update
The competition is heating up as these two rival
products are fighting it out 'mano-a-mano' as they've both been
recently thrown into the waiting hands of the consumer. Although
there is little in the way of defining a market leader, both companies
have started releasing their respective media players.
A recent news article hinted that HD DVD seemed
to have an early lead in the race for optical media supremacy, however
Blu-ray disc still had the upper hand in terms of being superior
in technical specifications.
See our news article about Blu-ray
Vs HD-DVD from July 2006.
As always, we'll keep you posted on all major movements
in the market.
Our charity appeal
HDC ran two charity appeals during 2006. The first
event involved the girls of HDC entering the Race for Life and collectively
raised a staggering £1,810 for Cancer Research - once again,
well done girls!
Our second pledge was to ditch our usual Christmas
card distribution, and instead opted to donate the money to our
chosen charity www.makeadream.org.
We proudly handed a cheque for £300 to one of the founders
of the Make a Dream charity, Mrs Francine Levin.
Mrs Levin is pictured here with Amy Hillas (Systems,
Operations and Marketing Coordinator for HDC).

2007, what's in store?
We'll be pulling out all stops during 2007 to bring
you as many new and exciting products and services as possible.
Keep an eye out for our exciting new website updates
throughout the year, including :
- a section dedicated to our new range of environmentally
friendly packaging,
- new products on our www.discpack.co.uk
website
- HDC Social page - a lighter look at HDC - find
out more about the HDC team!
- plus many more.
Usually at this time of year, HDC Media Group send out Christmas cards to offer our good wishes
for the season.
Last year we made the decision to enhance the lives
of people who are less fortunate than ourselves by supporting charities
around the country. This year HDC and its entire team have made
a donation to the Leeds based charity, Make a Dream, instead of
spending money on Christmas cards.

Make a Dream is a charity focused on making Dreams
come true for Yorkshires sick and terminally ill children.
Testimonials from Tony Blair and some of the countrys leading
childrens hospitals confirm the valuable work the charity
is achieving.
Make a Dream was chosen by HDC as a close relative
of an employee had their dream realised whilst they were seriously
ill with leukaemia. Megan was diagnosed with leukaemia at the age
of 10 and overcame the illness. However, she was re-diagnosed when
she was 17 with the same illness. Megans dream was to record
a pop record; a dream that was successfully fulfilled from the hard
work of the charity. Other dreams are more humble, like James who
wanted a washing machine for his Mum so she could spend more time
at the hospital with him.
Make a Dream ensures all money is wisely spent
on making dreams come true with 3 or 4 incredibly varied dreams
being fulfilled each month. Instead of sending a Christmas card
to HDC this year, why not help make a dream come true by donating
money to Make a Dream?

or make a donation, please visit:

No, we're not a stuck record; we're
simply talking about two different, but potentially very similar
forthcoming products engaged in a war for marketing domination.
Almost like a re-run of the similar cut-throat competition
between video formats VHS and Beta back in the 70's and early 80's,
the two products, Blu-ray by Sony and HD DVD by Toshiba are being
marketed all around the world, already gaining backing from major
companies such as :
|
Blu-ray:
- Apple
- Buena Vista Home Entertainment
- Dell
- Fox
- HP
- Hitachi
- Lionsgate
- LG
- MG Studios
- Mitsubishi Electric
- Panasonic
- Paramount Studios
- Pioneer
- Philips
- Samsung
- Sharp
- Sony
- TDK
- Thomson
- Twentieth Century Fox
- Universal Studios
- Walt Disney
- Warner Bros.
|
HD DVD:
- Canon
- Fuji
- Fujitsu
- HP
- Hitachi
- Intel
- Kenwood
- Konica
- Microsoft
- Mitsubishi
- Paramount Studios
- Sanyo
- Teac
- Toshiba
- Universal
- Warner Home Video
|
In time, the two formats are set to succeed the
current DVD technology. Blu-ray and HD-DVD have both been developed
to enable recording, playback and rewriting of high definition video
and data. The key to these technologies is the blue-violet laser
that is used to write the data to the disc. This blue laser has
a much shorter wavelength than the current red laser DVD system,
which makes it possible to read and write smaller pits, as a result,
these discs can hold up to 15 GB (HD-DVD) and 25 GB (Blu-ray) of
data on a single sided single layer 12cm disc.
HDC Media Group will be keeping tracks on
the progress of both these formats, so watch this space for further
updates.
For more information on both discs, check out these
websites:

Blu-ray by Sony - http://www.sonypictures.com/homevideo/bluray/
If you have an opinion on which format is the likely
successor, we would be delighted to hear your views; we may even
publish them in this section. Please use our enquiry
form.
Well done to the girls of HDC for
successfully completing the Race for Life on Sunday 4th June.
A total of £1,810 was raised
for Cancer Research, which smashed the original target of £1,250.
All the girls thoroughly enjoyed
the experience of competing and raising money together, and have
already made plans to run in the Race for Life again next year.
Keep up the good work!
On Sunday 4th June this year, the
girls from HDC will be participating in the Race for Life charity
event in aid of Cancer Research.
Cancer Research UKs Race for Life began in
1994, with one race in Battersea Park: 680 women came together and
raised £36,000 in sponsorship.
Twelve years on, Race for Life has grown to become
the UKs biggest women-only fundraising event. Over a £100
million has been raised for Cancer Research UK and over 2 million
women have been welcomed to the events.
This year Cancer Research UK is hoping to raise
£46 million by bringing 750,000 women together, all raising
sponsorship to support the life-saving work of Cancer Research UK.
The girls competing in the run are Lisa Atkinson,
Mel Chadwick, Amy Hillas, Emma Roberts, Emma Steward, Sue Steward
and Carrie Winfield.
Sponsorship
The girls are aiming to raise a total of £1,500
and are currently busy collecting donations. If you would like to
make a donation to support the girls in their run and help Cancer
Research UK, please contact Amy on 01274 65 65 65.
Thank you in advance,
The HDC Girls
On Behalf of Cancer Research UK
The start of a New Year is always
an ideal time to reflect on last year and the many successes it
brought to us all.
With last year being no exception, HDC once again
claimed a mighty triumph by delivering to market over 1800 different
optical media projects during the sales year, giving us an annual
turnover increase of 23.4% over our previous trading period.
We also added two fantastic new products to our
existing arsenal of CD's, DVD's
and packaging items. DualDisc,
which has DVD recorded material on one side and CD digital audio
material on the other was launched in July 2005, with ID-CD
disc tracking system arriving shortly afterwards.
2005 saw HDC expand into our new, purpose built
offices which we have now comfortably settled into. Our new space
provides us with future opportunities to expand our existing teams
and work practices, plus we're lucky enough to enjoy our very own
fantastic pool table room!
The end of 2005 saw HDC making a significant contribution
to the World Vision charity by collecting and donating money instead
of sending corporate Christmas Cards. In total, we raised a generous
amount enabling us to purchase much needed items for families in
Africa. Our gifts included a herd of goats, school classroom equipment
and medical/hygiene equipment amongst many others.
We are looking forward to another successful year
at HDC in 2006, and look forward to providing a great service to
all our customers over the coming year. Keep checking our website
for further exciting announcements.
DualDisc is a new two-sided disc
product introduced primarily by the video and music industry, with
DVD recorded material on one side and CD digital audio material
on the other.
DualDisc is playable on existing
CD and DVD hardware, personal computers and game consoles and capitalises
on the popularity of DVD by including a portion that can contain
exclusive video footage, unique films or other video content that
helps to expand the relationship between a company and its target
audience.

Our recent investment in CD-R and DVD-R print lacquer
and burn equipment makes us one of the largest producers of finished
CD-R/DVD-R in the UK. As a result, our in-house CD-R and DVD-R duplication
machinery can quickly produce high quality discs that can satisfy
the needs for small quantities or very fast turnaround on larger
volume production. We now offer duplication print and burn facilities
for Standard CD-R (700MB); Mini
CD-R (185MB); magiCarD-R
(50MB); Standard DVD-R (4.7GB)
and Dual layer DVD-R (8.5GB).
The benefits to clients can be significant, particularly
for those needing quantities from 100 upwards, because we offer
very fast turnaround times of between one and three days for up
to 5,000 discs that are produced with a high quality finish and
with a professional UV lacquer coating. Discs can also be supplied
blank so customers have the choice of whether they want to write
their own data and print their own design, or let us print and burn
the discs for them.”
We do, of course, offer free
downloadable vector art design templates for all CD, DVD, inserts
and packaging from our website. Alternatively, should clients require
assistance with design of on-body printing or packaging, our design
studio can help as we have full PC and Mac facilities for artwork,
whether simply outputting film or designing print from the outset.”
We continue to enjoy dramatic volume increases for
our DVD and CD replication services. If we took the annual number
of discs we produce (in excess of one million each month) and placed
them side by side they would stretch over 1212 miles, or further
than Lands End to John O'Groats.”
Our current internal and external annual plant
capacity of 1.2 billion discs would mean CDs stretching over three
and a half times round the world.”
We have notched up another UK first, by following
the world’s anti-piracy compliance programme (APC) guidelines,
developed by IRMA (the International Recording Media Association),
for all our finished CD's and DVD's.
IRMA, the leading association for organisations
involved in recording media, has created a world-wide standard against
piracy and to protect intellectual property rights.
By adhering to these guidelines we are ensuring that products are
always authorised and replicated legally. Also, the stringent process
of checking and clearing licenses is also most welcome.”
Thanks to continuing business growth, we have added
new, single storey, purpose made offices of over 3,000 sq feet in
Bradford to accommodate sales, production, marketing and studio
departments and support facilities.
Now into our ninth year in business, we are
set to record another year of turnover growth, with progress so
far this year already suggesting another 40% increase.

We can report great success
with the free prize draw that we launched in December 04.
The response was excellent.
We offered three prizes, with
winners drawn at random from all participants entering the
promotion, on January 31st.
We can announce that the first
prize, a 20" Nicam Stereo LCD TV was scooped by Exemplar
UK, in Slough. The second prize, a Sony DVD Player, was won
by Anthony Hodges Consulting in Wakefield, and the third prize
of three chart DVD's was collected by Harvey Walsh, based
in the Wirral. Many thanks to all who participated. |
HDC Media Group has made
two further new appointments. Paula Zadorozny has joined the company
as Financial Director responsible for supporting the activities
of the management group. Paula, a qualified ACCA accountant, has
spent the last eleven years working both in industry and in an accountancy
practice in Leicester.
Martin Gamble has been appointed
as a Mac Operator, having joined the company from Resource Print
Solutions (previously AlphaGraphics), where he undertook roles that
included artwork set-up, digital printing, proofing and providing
technical assistance for clients.
HDC Media Group has doubled
its internal CD and DVD duplication facilities by adding six Picasso
Direct-to-Disc digital inkjet printers, two Artcoater UV varnishing
systems, and fully robotic CD/DVD Duplication towers.
We have seen an increase in our
R-Media turnover by more than 50% in the last six months. With new
‘blank media’ buying power, greater production efficiency,
and an internal digital-print department, we are now even better
placed to dominate the UK duplication market.”
In addition, our pricing matrix
has been changed to reflect these new economies of scale and in
order that we can guarantee to be the lowest priced duplicator in
the UK”.
